It’s that time of year again when eating too much of the wrong foods, drinking more than usual, and not sleeping enough can wreak havoc with your skin. Then, there is that dashing around shopping, and getting into cold outside air and overheated indoor spaces. Fear not! We have three tips for maintaining healthy skin even during the holidays:
1: Sleep
As hard as it may be to get enough rest, you need to set aside blocks of time for sleep. Keep in mind that, in addition to giving your body and brain the rest they need, our skin repairs and regenerates while you sleep. So get your beauty rest all the time…and especially during the holidays.
2: Hydrate
Toast to this; toast to that. There is so much to be thankful for during the holidays. And, while you’re having all those glasses of champagne, eggnog, mulled wine, or whatever you prefer, you’ll want to drink lots of water as well. A good plan is to drink at least one glass of water every hour. This will keep you and your skin well hydrated.
3: Moisturize
Cold outside air and overheated inside air dries out skin and makes skin dry, cracked, and itchy. This is especially true for people with skin issues, as the weather can exacerbate conditions such as eczema. I recommend to all my patients that they use a recommended cream formulation moisturizer. And, if you don’t have a humidifier connected to your central heating unit, get and use a stand-alone hot air humidifier while sleeping.
