The laser hair removal process
This simple procedure requires no local anesthesia or pain medication. If we are treating sensitive areas, some of my patients prefer to use a topical anesthetic. For all patients, we apply a thin layer of clear gel (such as ultrasound gel) for increased skin protection and easy gliding of the handpiece. During the treatment, you may feel a pinching, warm, stinging sensation.
The treatment selectively treats the hair follicle without damaging the surrounding skin.
A few things to know about Laser Hair Removal
- Hair may take up to 2 weeks to fall out.
- Hair removal requires a series of treatments. The number of treatments depends on body location and type of hair. Average number of treatments is 6-8.
- Average treatment interval is 4-6 weeks depending on the body part. The laser targets only hair in the “active” growth phase, so there is no advantage to scheduling visits closer together.
Possible side effects
Very few patients experience any side effects. The few who have had any noticed a slight reddening or local swelling of the skin, similar to a sunburn.
