Hyperpigmentation: Treatments are available

Sun freckles may have looked cute when you were a kid, but now you think of them as unwanted uneven skin tone, or even as age spots. As you age, you may have also developed pigmentary disorders of the skin or have dark marks left behind from acne. The darkening in these disorders occurs when an excess of melanin, the brown pigment that produces normal skin color, forms deposits in the skin.

The good news is we have treatments to help you reduce hyperpigmentation and give you a more even complexion. Treatments vary based on your type of hyperpigmentation, your skin tone, and how much downtime you’re willing to take.

Microdermabrasion may be the solution for you. It’s a non-invasive treatment that gently removes the uppermost layer of skin. The goal is to get rid of superficial and minimal discoloration. It renews overall skin tone and texture. Microdermabrasion has low risk and rapid recovery; it is painless and requires no needles or anesthesia.

We may also recommend a chemical peel. These work on improving the look of the skin, and most peels have limited downtime. Peels are great ways to lighten unwanted pigmentation and even out skin tone. They may also reduce fine lines, as well as treat certain types of acne and acne scars. Chemical peels can improve your skin’s look and feel. Keep in mind that not all skin types are suitable for a peel, and if you have a history of scarring, you may want to choose a different option.

Overall Sunspots

If you have extensive sun spots, you may benefit from Cutera’s LimeLight laser treatment, the customizable, non-invasive light treatment for facial rejuvenation that helps reduce the signs of aging. This procedure offers the advantage of improving skin tone and surface imperfections associated with aging and photodamage.

The treatment can feel like a pinprick or a rubber band snapping on the skin. During your Cutera LimeLight session, the light seeks out the skin discoloration, lifting it up and out.

Since we’re targeting the brown spots, you can expect the treated areas to turn dark and slough off within a week or two.
