It’s National Hair Loss Awareness Month

PRP for hairlossAugust is National Hair Loss Awareness Month.  Millions of people experience some hair loss. For some their hair re-grows without doing anything. For others, they need treatment for regrowth. And, for others, their hair will never re-grow.

Why do we lose hair?

It’s normal to lose about 50–100 hairs every day. It happens to just about everyone and, for most people, new hairs come in to replace those that were “shed.” But for many people, their hair loss is much more aggressive and not replaced, at least not on its own.

Androgenetic alopecia, or hereditary hair loss, is the most common cause of hair loss. It affects about 80 million men and women in the U.S. This type of hair loss usually begins gradually and becomes more noticeable with each passing year.

When hair loss begins suddenly, the cause may be due to illness, diet, medicine, or childbirth. Even the way you style and care for your hair can create hair loss.

What can you do?

There are different causes of hair loss, many of which there is no effective medical treatment for.  The first step is seeing a board-certified dermatologist for proper evaluation and a diagnosis, after which treatment options can be discussed, if available.

New Treatment Option for Androgenetic Hair Loss: PRP

Studies have shown that PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) therapy works well for the androgenetic type hair loss. It helps promote hair growth by prolonging the growing phase of the hair cycle. It is effective for both men and women. PRP is most effective for recent hair loss, so if this is a concern for you, the sooner you start treatment, the better!

PRP is an in-office cosmetic procedure that consists of drawing a small amount of your blood and then using a centrifuge to separate the PRP cells. Next, the PRP is injected into the scalp to promote hair growth.

I am very pleased to let you know that we are now treating this type of hair loss with PRP. Please note that since PRP hair loss therapy is not for everyone, we have set up a special procedure. Interested patients need to schedule a consultation with Adriana at 312 266 NIMA (6462). There is a $100 consultation fee, which can then be applied to your treatment if scheduled.
