PRP: A New Treatment Option

PRP - a new treatment optionAthletes have been using Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy to recover from sports injuries for several years. Now, it’s making great in-roads in dermatology.

I am pleased to announce that, starting in July, I will be providing new cosmetic services: PRP for androgenetic alopecia, facial rejuvenation, and acne scars.

What is PRP?

Blood is made up of three components: white blood cells, red blood cells and platelets, all of which are suspended in a liquid called plasma. Platelets contain hundreds of proteins called growth factors that can aid in the healing and regenerating process. We can separate the blood to obtain just these platelets with plasma by doing the following:

  1. Drawing the patient’s blood, usually in the arm. The tube used to collect the blood is especially designed to separate the components  of the blood so that we can extract the PRP.
  2. Spinning the blood down in a centrifuge, which causes the platelets to accumulate together.
  3. Collecting the platelet rich plasma (PRP).
  4. PRP treatment for Androgenetic Alopecia

When it comes to the genetic type of hair loss, studies have shown that PRP therapy works well. It helps promote hair growth by prolonging the growing phase of the hair cycle. It is effective for both men and women suffering from this type of hair loss. Research has shown that it is most effective for recent hair loss, so if this is an area of concern for you, the sooner you start treatment, the better!

PRP with Microneedling for Facial Rejuvenation and Acne Scars

Combining PRP with microneedling have shown to have long-lasting benefits. Together, they stimulate rapid skin repair and induce further collagen replacement. This combination can significantly improve and repair the condition of your skin, and is proving a very successful way to smooth out acne scars.

PRP with Microneedling is effective because it triggers the patient’s own body to heal itself without any foreign substances. The skin starts to repair itself by simply producing more collagen, softening scars, tightening the skin, and giving the patient a more youthful overall appearance.
