The arrival of our colder, drier air means your skin must deal with these seasonal changes. You may enjoy wearing sweaters, hats and gloves after a hot summer, but your skin may not be as happy. It’s having to cope with a host of cold weather problems and, since we know that we have months of even colder weather to come, now is the time to take a closer look at some of the skin care issues I see this time of year and help you tackle them head on.
The most common complaints I hear is what people call their “winter skin.” It’s dry; it’s itchy; it’s blotchy; it’s cracking. They hate it! Much of this is caused by dehydration. You need a different routine.
- Drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated.
- Hot showers may feel good, but they aren’t great for your skin. They strip the moisture you need for protection. So, do yourself a favor and turn down the heat!
- Apply a non-fragrant moisturizer daily. Get into the routine of applying it twice daily before your skin gets dry and itchy.
- Add a humidifier to your home. A tabletop one in your bedroom and/or home office can make a really big difference.
Itchy, Bumpy, Rough Spots
Even when you follow a good skin care routine, you can still get itchy, bumpy or rough spots in cold weather. Don’t scratch…no matter how hard that may be. It can create a secondary infection, which worsens the problem. Instead, see us. Oftentimes, a prescription topical steroid can help calm down inflammation and itching.
