As we continue through the colder months and rely on indoor heating, many of my patients notice significant changes in how their skin looks and feels. While heating systems keep us warm and comfortable indoors, they also reduce humidity in the air—making it much harder for the skin to maintain proper hydration.
Throughout the winter season, I hear the same concerns from many of my patients: skin feels tight after cleansing, makeup doesn’t sit as smoothly, fine lines appear more noticeable, or redness and sensitivity flare unexpectedly. The good news is that with a few adjustments, it’s absolutely possible to keep your skin hydrated, healthy, and glowing all season long.
Why Indoor Heating Is So Hard on Your Skin
Most indoor heating systems—whether forced air, radiators, or space heaters—pull moisture out of the air. That dry environment draws water from your skin, weakening its barrier and increasing trans-epidermal water loss. When the barrier is compromised, skin becomes more prone to flaking, irritation, sensitivity, and inflammation.
I also remind patients that dehydration isn’t limited to those with dry skin. Even oily or acne-prone skin can become dehydrated during the winter, often responding by producing excess oil, which may contribute to congestion or breakouts.
My Daily Winter Skincare Recommendations
Here are my top five winter skincare recommendation:
- Switch to a More Supportive Moisturizer: Lightweight summer moisturizers are rarely enough during the winter. Use a richer, barrier-supporting formula that includes ingredients such as ceramides or hyaluronic acid. These help replenish moisture while strengthening the skin’s natural protective barrier.
- Cleanse Gently: Harsh cleansers and overly hot water can worsen winter dryness. A gentle, hydrating cleanser is your friend, and wash with lukewarm water to avoid stripping your skin of essential oils.
- Add Moisture Back into the Air: Using a humidifier—especially overnight—can make a noticeable difference. Restoring moisture to your environment helps your skin retain hydration and can also improve dry lips, sinuses, and overall comfort.
- Continue Using Sunscreen: NEVER skip this step even in the winter. UV exposure contributes to dryness, premature aging, and skin damage year-round. Look for a hydrating sunscreen that protects without leaving the skin feeling tight.
- Support Hydration from Within: Staying well-hydrated supports overall skin health, but topical hydration is also essential during colder months. Moisturizers and serums help seal in moisture that indoor heating continually pulls away from the skin.
