Your Skin and Climate Change

Your skin is your body’s first line of defense against the outside world. As such, it must adjust to whatever environment you’re in, but that can be difficult to do in the extreme weather swings we are experiencing. The National Institutes of Health and the American Academy of Dermatology report that climate change influences the severity of dermatologic conditions. These include skin infections, harsher effects from sun exposure, and environmental irritants. I’m now seeing an increase in the number of patients experiencing these dermatological conditions.

There continues to be an increased risk of skin cancer. Fungal skin diseases are also spreading – both from warmer temperatures and shifts in global wind patterns, carrying the microbes farther and to different corners of the world.

What you can do

You’ve heard me say this over and over again, and I’m saying it here again — Sunscreen!! Wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen that’s at least SPF 30 everyday! And, if you’re outside or near a window, reapply at least every two hours. It doesn’t matter if it’s sunny or not, high (or low) temperature, sunscreen is your best defense against climate change.

Whenever possible, it’s a really good idea to avoid and quickly treat fungal infections — such as Athletes’ foot and nail fungus.

Get a facial treatment

Protect your skin by taking good care of it and reduce signs of sun damage with one of our excellent facial treatments:

HydraFacial

This is an invigorating 3-step treatment that cleans, exfoliates, and hydrates your skin. It’s soothing, refreshing, non-irritating, and immediately effective for all skin types. HydraFacial is great for countering some of the climate effects by removing dead skin cells and extracting impurities while simultaneously cleansing, hydrating, and moisturizing. Even the most sensitive skin can benefit from a HydraFacial treatment.

Microdermabrasion

Get rid of unwanted dead cells, open clogged pores, and leave your skin feeling smooth and refreshed. Microdermabrasion is completely non-invasive and a great way to gently exfoliate your skin without any chemicals. It removes the skin’s dead and dry outer layer to reveal fresh, healthy skin underneath. This procedure renews overall skin tone and texture.

Chemical Peels

Help improve skin surface texture and reduce visible signs of fine lines and wrinkles. We offer various PCA peels to meet the needs of every skin type and issue. This is an excellent method for brightening skin color and clarity, exfoliating your skin, and can improve your skin’s look and feel. It should be an important addition to your skin care regimen.
