As temperatures cool and humidity drops, you may notice that your skin feels different. It may become drier or tighter, feel more sensitive, or lose some of the hydration you had during warmer months.
Your skin responds to its environment, and seasonal changes can affect how well it retains moisture and maintains its natural barrier. Fall is a good time to take another look at your daily skincare routine.
What worked this summer may not be what your skin needs this fall.
Start With Gentle Cleansing
Cleansing removes makeup, sunscreen, oil, and impurities, but your skin shouldn’t feel tight or stripped afterward.
As the air becomes cooler and drier, a cleanser that worked well during a hot, humid summer may become too aggressive, particularly if you have dry or sensitive skin.
If your skin is oily or acne-prone, you still need effective cleansing, but over-cleansing can disrupt the skin barrier and contribute to irritation.
Your Moisturizer May Need an Update
A lightweight moisturizer may provide enough hydration during summer, but cooler weather and lower humidity can increase moisture loss. Moving to a more hydrating or emollient moisturizer can help support the skin barrier and reduce dryness, flaking, and irritation.
This doesn’t mean everyone needs a heavy cream. Your moisturizer should be selected based on your skin type, current condition, and the other products you’re using.
Don’t Put Away the Sunscreen
Summer may be over, but sunscreen season isn’t. Ultraviolet radiation reaches your skin throughout the year, including on cool or cloudy days. Daily sun protection helps reduce your risk of skin cancer, sun damage, uneven pigmentation, and premature skin aging.
No matter the season or weather, always wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 every day.
Re-evaluate Your Active Ingredients
More products or stronger ingredients don’t necessarily mean better results. Using too many active products at once can lead to dryness, redness, sensitivity, and disruption of the skin barrier.
As the weather changes, reassess how often you’re using retinoids, exfoliants, and acids, especially if your skin is becoming drier or more sensitive. Antioxidants may also continue to play an important role in your routine.
If you’re layering multiple products without knowing whether they’re still appropriate for your skin, fall is a good time to simplify and reassess.
Consider Professional Treatments
Fall is also a good time to address changes that became more noticeable after summer, including dullness, uneven texture, pigmentation, and dryness.
Depending on your skin, treatments such as chemical peels, microdermabrasion, Secret RF, or other procedures may help improve its appearance and complement your home routine.
At NIMA Skin Institute, we evaluate your skin, its condition, sensitivity, concerns, and goals before recommending what’s appropriate for you.
Give Your Skin What It Needs Now
Your skincare routine shouldn’t be static. Your skin changes with the seasons, with age, and in response to your environment, lifestyle, and overall health.
Fall is a good time to ask a simple question: Is this still what my skin needs?
